To the surprise of no one, Super Bowl 49 set new social media records.
TORONTO – Super Bowl XLIX is officially the biggest Super Bowl game in Twitter history, thanks to its dramatic ending. The game – which saw the New England Patriots take the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 – garnered over 28.4 million tweets around the world Sunday.
According to Twitter, #SB49 was the most tweeted Super Bowl ever, surpassing last year’s game which generated 24.9 million tweets.
But it was Malcolm Butler’s unexpected interception of a pass by the Seahawks’ Russell Wilson with 20 seconds left in the game that stole the spotlight online. The game-changing moment generated over 395,000 tweets per minute (TPM).
